The school garden at École des Genêts – Geneva
Geneva’ s only school vegetable garden at the heart of the school, for a closer look at living things!
Parents involved in the school vegetable garden
During the summer, 8 families volunteered to help maintain the vegetable garden. By taking charge of the garden for a week each, they were able to enjoy summer vegetables and help the plants get through the heatwave.
In September, thanks to the support of families, the garden is lush and ready for the final vegetable garden workshops.
Built by children for children. The kitchen garden at École des Genêts rose from the ground in 2022. This year, 6 classes (from 2P to 5P) worked from A to Z to create this magnificent little patch of greenery just a stone’s throw from Les Nations.
A school vegetable garden to study life
Construction of the tubs, planting, sowing, planting, maintenance and, of course, harvesting; in just a few months, the students have succeeded in creating a beautiful and productive garden. A tool for work and discovery that will continue over the years, right here, a stone’s throw from their classroom.
Support that integrates with the school curriculum
Throughout the year, we worked with the classes to guide them through the work in the garden. But also to make the link between « classical » learning and the vegetable garden.
- Calculating volumes for compost delivery
- Sharing available space between classes
- Vegetable origins
- Setting up a display to present the project
- Harvest sharing
- Identifying « pests » or « auxiliaries
A cross-disciplinary approach that allows students to integrate the knowledge taught at school in a more concrete way.
In September, thanks to the support of families, the garden is lush and ready for the final vegetable garden workshops.
My congratulations to the students on this great achievement. May you marvel at what you have created all your school years.
Thanks also to the teachers for their unfailing participation.
Thanks to the Schools Department and SEV for their help.
And, of course, thanks to the parents who water the garden during the summer.
