By understanding the kitchen garden as an ecosystem, the children can become aware of the environmental challenges of the future.

Our approach
Carrot Seed
Global warming and the loss of biodiversity present us with real challenges. One of the keys lies beneath our feet. Soil has the capacity to store CO2 while producing healthy food.
Graine de Carotte helps you discover its virtuous gardening techniques, without fertilizers or pesticides, thanks solely to the biology of soil life and good management of the cultivation program. Our approach is always as cross-disciplinary as possible, and we strive to offer a comprehensive view of agriculture to help you achieve a beautiful, productive vegetable garden without the use of pesticides or fertilizers.
A cross-functional approach
The plants we eat today are the fruit of millennia of evolution, which has paralleled that of humankind. Understanding the past gives us the means to approach the future differently. the future.

Questions we’re regularly asked about urban vegetable gardens
Who should you contact to set up an urban vegetable garden in Geneva?
To us!
But we still advise you to discuss it with your commune or building management company. For projects in the City of Geneva, the Agenda21 department provides support.
Once you’ve found a plot of land, we’d be delighted to help you create your own urban vegetable garden.
Can you garden on a balcony?
Yes, you can grow flowers and certain vegetables and herbs on a balcony. We often organize « gardening in a small space« Don’t hesitate to come and get some advice and create a green cocoon on your balcony.
Can you grow permaculture on a balcony?
Yes, but one of the key principles is to host a whole ecosytem and plant your plants in the middle. Your « balcony ecosytem » will therefore be limited. On the 7th floor in the city, you can host a whole flying insect ecosystem. (but forget about hedgehogs…)
What's the minimum surface area for an urban vegetable garden?
1m is always infinitely more than 0… So even the smallest plot of land can be used for vegetable production.
- From 5m2 of garden: you’ve got enough to have fun and make a few salads in summer.
- Between 10 and 20m2 of vegetable garden: you’ll be able to grow beautiful salads, and save a lot of money.
- From 100m2 of garden: it starts to get serious! You can eat most of the summer on your vegetable production.
Can vegetables be grown high up?
Yes, and given the price of m2 in Geneva, it’s in everyone’s interest to grow as many vegetables as possible to save floor space. In addition to tomatoes and beans, which climb naturally, you can grow cucumbers, melons, squash and malabar spinach.
Check out our events, we regularly organize workshops Gardening in a small space
Vegetable garden in a tub or in the ground?
Both go.
- The soil dries out more slowly. And you don’t have to buy boards, which means you have more money to spend on other things.
- Potager en bacs: It’s lower and less messy for shoes (very practical in schools). Well-signposted planting and walking areas (very common in shared gardens).
What is the minimum soil depth for an urban vegetable garden?
The more the better…. But from 30cm you can grow most leafy vegetables and beans. Over 40cm, you can grow all vegetables.
When should you start a vegetable garden in Geneva?
In other words, gardening is a year-round activity! Winter is for pruning and ordering seeds. March is the start of early vegetables in the garden (radishes, onions, peas…). Tomato seedlings in mid-March! In mid-May, all the seedlings join the garden for the start of summer.
What surface area do you need to be self-sufficient?
A human being consumes about 1 ton of food a year. To live solely from the produce of one’s garden seems to us to be an illusion… So to move towards a form of food autonomy, you’d need a minimum of 1000m2 for 3 people, including 300 m2 of greenhouses. And an average of 15 to 30 hours work per week. (planting, maintenance, preparation, cooking, canning…)
We prefer to think that every kg of food produced locally is just as much oil saved and healthy, free food gained.
Is it profitable to have an urban vegetable garden?
If you have 1m2, install a drip and a web cam to monitor it via Bluetooth. It won’t be profitable or even ecological… Profitability depends on surface area. Below 10m, we advise you to grow products that are expensive to buy (herbs, heirloom tomatoes).
Above 100m2, we recommend growing vegetables for food and storage (potatoes, squash, fruit, etc.).
In any case, exceptional vegetables (in addition to not being donated) are becoming increasingly rare on the shelves. And that’s priceless!
Can you grow vegetables without water?
No
Even if some plants are very good at getting water from deep underground. Until proven otherwise, plants don’t make water…
Which is the most productive vegetable?
If you take the weight, it’s the sweet potato and the taupinambour with not far from 20kg/m2!
If you look at the price, basil is probably the winner. With a COOP price approaching CHF 100/kg, you can quickly make m2 profitable.
Are there any free gardening courses in Geneva?
